 Kool & the Gang, officially launched in 1969, after performing for five years under various band titles, has influenced the music of three generations and the band has become true recording industry legends. In 1969, Kool & the Gang released their self-titled debut album/ It was the introduction to a theme, music is the message, that Kool & the Gang stands by today. The instrumental album was an expression of their deep love of music. It was also an introduction to their signature sound and the fierce horn arrangements created by Khalis, Dee Tee, and Spike. Their debut album spawned their first Billboard R&B charted single Kool & the Gang and later Let the Music Take Your Mind. Kool & the Gang landed global commercial endorsements, supported countless charitable causes and were the only American group to participate in Band Aid’s 1984 Do They Know It’s Christmas project for famine victims in Africa. With the explosion of hip-hop in the 90’s, Kool & the Gang’s incredible catalog of grooves made them DJ favorites. They were second only to R&B icon James Brown as sources of rap music samples. Today, the group enjoys global fame and recognition and a following that spans generations due in part to the groups widely sampled catalogue.

March 4, 2022 The NFL Physicians Society (NFLPS) awarded the Arthur C. Rettig Award for Academic Excellence to Joseph C. Maroon, MD.  Dr. Maroon is a neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers for 38 years and recently presented at the NFLPS scientific meeting during the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine. Dr. Maroon is the first Neurosurgeon to receive this award.

Joseph C. Maroon, M.D., FACS, is Professor and Vice chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery and Heindl Scholar in Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is a world-renowned neurosurgeon, health and nutrition expert and Ironman triathlete. He obtained his medical and neurosurgical training at Indiana University, Georgetown University, Oxford University in England and the University of Vermont.
 
He is regarded as a premiere specialist in the surgical treatment of injuries and diseases of the brain and spine, particularly with microscopic and minimally invasive procedures. He had done extensive research into brain tumors, concussions and diseases of the spine that have led to many innovative techniques for diagnosing and treating these disorders. My Music Flashback Series continues this week featuring the genre of R& B. Soul & Funk.It can be a great tribute to a music artist when their style can influence current pop culture for century's & decades.

The genre of Soul, R & B & Funk is taken for granted today & the influence is heard & seen in grooves, style & fashions most of todays' pop artists. However, the original recording artists truly paid dues to get in the position to not only become recording artists, but to write & produce their work. At that time, some of the artists who created a new innovative style had the challenge of the music executives not understanding the genre, and some even refusing to promote the compositions. Today we call this music - classics & the artists trailblazers. My guest this week in one of them.
 
Bobby Eli is a Grammy Award Winning, internationally acclaimed Grammy Winning Record Producer, Engineer, Songwriter, Arranger and Multi-Instrumentalist.
 
Bobby was a founding member of the famed Philadelphia studio group, MFSB. If the music is Philadelphia International, Gamble & Huff / TSOP. Bobby's music is more than likely on it. His signature guitar licks can be heard on countless gold and platinum hit recordings by artists such as: Chris Brown, Jay Z, George Clinton, Elton John, David Bowie, Hall and Oats, The Jacksons, MFSB, The Ojay’s, Teddy Pendergrass, The Stylistics, Lou Rawls,Salsoul Orchestra, Patti Labelle, Phyllis Hyman, B.B. King, Dixie Hummingbirds, Billy Paul, The Spinners, Johnny Mathis, Deniece Williams, Wilson Pickett, Dusty Springfield, Nancy Wilson, and many other wonderful artists too numerous to mention.

As a songwriter and producer Eli was responsible for such monster hits as the Grammy winning number one song, “Love Won’t Let Me Wait”, as recorded by Luther Vandross, “Sideshow” and “Three Ring Circus” by Blue Magic, “Just Don’t Want To Be Lonely” by the Main Ingredient, the first two albums by: “Atlantic Starr”, self titled and “Straight to the Point”, the Grammy nominated album: “Love Niecy Style” by Deniece Williams, Rose Royce’s number one U.K. hit single “Magic Touch” and their album” Music Magic”. Bobby was responsible for the Jackie Moore number one dance classic,” This Time Baby”, the number one international hit singles “Zoom” by Fat Larry’s Band and “Love Town” by Booker Newberry III.

Artists as diverse as Luther Vandross, BeBe & CeCe Winans, Shaggy, Regina Belle, The Whispers, Isaac Hayes, The Dells, Sister Sledge, Englebert Humperdink, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and an array of
others have recorded Bobby’s songs.

Bobby now owns and operates The Grooveyard @ Studio E, a recording facility in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. His intimate studio is only minutes from his hometown, The City Of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. Cooley's Anemia is a Fatal Genetic Blood Disease. The Cooly's Anemia Foundation is working with medical professionals enhancing the quality of life of patients and educating the medical , trait carriers and the public about Cooley's anemia/thalassemia major.


This episode is dedicated to encourage the Parents, Patients & Loved Ones that are learning about, managing & perservering everyday with Cooley's Anemia, the supporters of Thalassemia, Friends, Researchers & Physicians..

 In Addition, this Show is a Dedication to the late Patient Ralph A. Cazzetta. He was a Cooley's 
Patient, a Nurse, Friend & Great Support Peer to Many in their Life Journey thru thriving as a Thal Patient!!

 History was made in 2022 at the annual board meeting of the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation (CAF) when Ralph Colasanti was elected the first person with thalassemia to serve as National President of the Foundation’s board of directors. The Foundation, which was started in 1954, is the primary voice for those with thalassemia, a group of genetic disorders, one of which is also called Cooley’s anemia. People with severe forms of the disease require lifelong blood transfusions as often as every 2 weeks and often beginning in infancy.

“We are very pleased to have reached this historic moment and know that Ralph’s talents, skills, knowledge, and expertise will serve him well in this position,” says Peter Chieco, immediate Past National President of CAF. “Of equal importance, being a patient himself will provide a fresh perspective. No matter how deep the connection that I and our previous Presidents have with the thalassemia community, it is not quite the same experience as actually being a person who was born with and has lived with thalassemia for their entire lives.”

“The fact that I am able to serve in this capacity speaks to the tremendous efforts of The Cooley’s Anemia Foundation throughout the years,” says Ralph Colasanti. “Those that served 
before me helped propel many advances in the field of thalassemia over the last 20-30 years. Their commitment, with support from our donors, brought forth dedicated clinicians and researchers who are experts in thalassemia, not only advancing our quantity of life but the most important quality of life. These medical advances and the need for a safe blood supply are tirelessly promoted and supported by CAF.

“When I was diagnosed, the outlook was grim, a life expectancy into my late teens, early twenties, with many warning me that living a normal life – having a family, working, living very far into my adult years – was not likely, but faith brought me all that and more. And while there are still many mountains a person with thalassemia has to climb, we now are in a position where a well-managed patient can enjoy many of the same things as a person not living with thalassemia. It’s a challenge, but I and others like me have learned to never give up. And definitely don’t stop believing!”

Ralph is a financial coach and IT consultant at Holy Angels School. He and his wife are the parents of a son and a daughter and recently welcomed their first grandchild.
